Electric discharge means the passage of electrical current through a material which normally does not conduct electricity.
Electrical discharge through gas means passing electricity through a non-conducting gas. The gas then gets ionized. This means some of the electrons are separated from the gas molecules and then a conductive path of positive ions and free negative electrons is formed.
Current flows through this path till the voltage drops below some much lower level than was needed to start the discharge.
