Brownsted-Lowry theor-
Proton donatio, acceptance or transfer happens only in presence of other substances. The theory does not explain the acidic nature of electron deficient substances like BF3, AlCl3, FeCl3, etc. It fails to explain acidic nature of non- metallic oxides and basic nature of metallic oxides.
Lewis theory-
the theory involves the formation of dative bond between acid and base. the formation of water from proton and hydroxyl ion do not involve coordinate covalent bond. generally neutralisation is instaneous, if a strong acid or base is involved. but lewis neutralisation predicts slow reactions. lewis theory does not explain the relative strength of acids or bases. the catalytic action of proton is also not explained by lewis theory.
