The extent of deviation of a real gas from ideal behaviour is studied using the term compressibility factor (Z).

Negative deviation - Z<1 (i.e . attraction dominates)

Positive deviation - Z>1 (i.e. replusion dominates)

The closer the gas is to its critical point or its boiling point, the more Z deviates from the ideal case.
