there are many elements in the world. And i’ve studied that compounds does not show any properties of its reactant elements. (Eg:- ozone- poisonous, oxygen- essential to live)
then how they found that like ozone means 3 oxide atoms, MgO means magnesium and oxygen, etc??

It's fascinating how the world of chemistry works, especially when it comes to understanding compounds and their properties. The distinction between elements and compounds is fundamental to chemistry, and your observation about compounds exhibiting different properties from their constituent elements is spot on. Let's delve into how scientists identify and name compounds like ozone and magnesium oxide, and why their properties can differ so dramatically from those of the individual elements.

The Basics of Elements and Compounds

Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Each element is made up of atoms that share the same number of protons in their nuclei. Compounds, on the other hand, are substances formed when two or more elements chemically combine in fixed ratios. The properties of compounds can be vastly different from those of the elements that compose them.

Understanding Chemical Formulas

When we look at a compound's chemical formula, it provides us with crucial information about its composition. For example:

  • Ozone (O3): This molecule consists of three oxygen atoms. While oxygen gas (O2) is essential for life, ozone is a powerful oxidant and can be harmful to living organisms.
  • Magnesium Oxide (MgO): This compound is made up of magnesium and oxygen. Magnesium is a metal that burns brightly and is reactive, while oxygen is a gas that supports combustion. Together, they form a stable ionic compound that is used in various applications, including as a refractory material.

Why Properties Change

The change in properties between elements and their compounds can be attributed to the nature of chemical bonds and the arrangement of atoms. When elements combine, they form new bonds that can alter the way atoms interact with each other and with their environment. Here are a few key points to consider:

  • Bonding Types: The type of bond formed (ionic, covalent, metallic) influences the properties of the compound. For instance, ionic compounds like MgO have high melting points and conduct electricity when dissolved in water, whereas covalent compounds like ozone do not conduct electricity and can be gases at room temperature.
  • Molecular Structure: The arrangement of atoms in a molecule affects its reactivity and physical properties. Ozone's bent structure leads to its unique reactivity compared to the linear structure of O2.
  • Energy Changes: The formation of compounds often involves energy changes that can stabilize the new substance, making it behave differently than its constituent elements.

How Scientists Determine Composition

Scientists use various methods to determine the composition of compounds:

  • Empirical Formulas: These provide the simplest whole-number ratio of elements in a compound. For example, the empirical formula for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is HO.
  • Molecular Formulas: These show the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule. For ozone, the molecular formula is O3.
  • Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry: These techniques allow scientists to analyze the composition of substances and identify the elements present.

In summary, the fascinating world of chemistry reveals how compounds can exhibit properties that are entirely different from the elements that form them. The way atoms bond and arrange themselves plays a crucial role in determining these properties, and scientists have developed systematic methods to identify and name these compounds based on their composition. Understanding this helps us appreciate the complexity and beauty of chemical interactions in our world.
