One of the property of tansition elements is their ability to form coloured ions both in solid and in aqueous solution.Like,Ti(III) is purple,Fe(III) is yellow etc. This tendency of tansition metals exist because the d-orbitals in these ions contain unpaired electrons.This property has been extensively used for detection and estimation of metal ions.
