Several blocks of magnesium are fixed to the bottom of a ship because they prevent rusting of iron (ship body) by acting as sacrificial metal as they are more reactive than iron, meaning the magnesium will rust instead of the iron .Magnesium acts as a sacrificial anode thus getting itself corroded but protecting the ship.
