There are 3 definitions of oxidation:
  • Loss of e-
  • Addition of oxygen 
  • Removal of hydrogen
So l guess first part of your question is answered. 
Coming to the next part... A typical electronegative element tends to withdraw e- from other elements and we know loss of e- means oxidation.
