Is the n-factor specific for a species of a specific reaction? Can the n-factor be different for different atoms within a compound? What is the n-factor of CH 4 in: CH 4 + 2O 2 => 2H 2 O + CO 2 ?

Dear student

n-factor is the property of a compound, not an atom. The same atom can have different oxidation number in different compounds.
For example, in the equtaion above
n-factor of C in CH4 = – 4 and each H in CH4 = +1
n-factor of C in CO2 = +4 and each O in CO2 = – 2
