Here, Nitrogen is more electronegative than carbon in cyanide.
Due to this reason negative charge is developed on nitrogen only
not on carbon in cyanide ion

As the formal charge of c is - 1 so the negative charge is on the c atom4(valence electrons) - 1(lone pair) - 1/2(6)(no. Of bonded electrons)
