how to know if a compound will be linear or non linear or i have to memorize it

the shape of the structure depend on its stability.a givencompound acquires most stable structure.
in case of ICl2- the structure is linear.because the lone pair-lonepair repulsin is the least in the linear structure making the structure linear.3 lone pair are at the 3 corners of a triangle.
two cl are above and below the triangle.
remember lp-lp>lp-bp>bp-bp lp and bp represents lone pair and bond pair.
