Rusting of iron is due to the generation of an electrochemical cell.in this iron act as an anode of electrochemical cell and water as an cathode.in the presence of water the reaction is as follows
mehanism:-
For iron corroding in water the cell reaction
anode:-2Fe => 2Fe2+ + 4e-
cathode:-O2 + 2H2O + 4e- => 4OH-
