  1. The salt of a weak acid and strong base undergoes hydrolysis in water to produce additional OH- ions.

For example, sodium acetate in water is hydrolysed as per the equation:
             Na(+) + CH3COO(-) + H2O = Na(+) + CH3COOH + OH(-).
Since acetic acid is a weak acid, it remains unionised in solution and the OH- ions make the solution basic or alkaline.

Similarly, a salt of a strong acid and weak base is acidic in aqueous solution. Here, the cation undergoes hydrolysis to form additional H+ ions., along with undissociated weak base.

Only aqueous solutions of salts of strong acids and strong bases have a pH value of 7, as they do not undergo hydrolysis.
