Role of coordination compounds in -
.Biological systems- These compounds are of great impotance in biological systems.Like chlorophyll pigment responsible for photosynthesis, haemoglobin, pigment of blood are the coordination compounds of magnesium and iron respectively.
-.Analytical chemistry Coordination compounds find many uses in qualitative as well as quantitative chemical analysis. Many of the familiar colour reactions given by metal ions with a no. of ligands as a result of coordination entities.form the basis for their detection and estimation. For ex- EDTA,DMG etc are some reagents.
.Medicinal chemistry- Chelate therapy is using nowdays in medicinal chemistry. For ex- treatment of problems caused by the presence of metals in toxic proportions in plants/amimal systems.Like excess of Cu and Fe are removed by the chelating ligands D-penicillamine and desferrioxime B via the formation of coordination compounds.
.Extraction/metallurgy of metals-Metals like Ag and Au make use of complex formation for their extractions.Purification of metals can be acheived through formation and subsequent decomposition of their coordination compounds. For ex- Impure Ni is converted to [Ni(CO)4],which decomposes to give pure Ni.
