Difference between physical and chemical equilibrium?

Dear Tanay

Physical equilibria do not involve changes to the chemical properties of the substances involved. For instance the equilibrium of water vapor with liquid water in a partly filled sealed bottle. It is a physical equilibrium since the water molecules have only changed from liquid to vapor.

Chemical equilibria on the other hand involve changes in the chemical composition of substances. Bond breaking and bond formation is involved. An example would be the dissociation of acetic acid . There is an interchange of of particles between ions and molecules whose rate of exchange becomes equal when equilibrium is established.

HC2H3O2 + H2O = H3O +1 + C2H3O2 -1

Physical equilibrium is defined as the equilibrium which develops between different phases or physical properties. In these processes, there is no change in chemical composition.

The following are some examples of Physical Equilibria:

  • Solid-Liquid Equilibria
  • Liquid-Gas Equilibria
  • Solid-Vapor Equilibria
Chemical Equilibrium
A reaction is in chemical equilibrium when the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction.

The physical equilibrium states that the physical states of the system does not change. But Chemical equilibrium is the equilibrium in which concentration of reactant and product are not changed with time.
