In an avalanche photodiode,the photo-generated electrons are accelerated through a very largeelectrical potential difference. The high-energy electrons then collidewith other atoms in the solid and ionize them, thus creating anavalanche of secondary charge carriers and increasing the sensitivityof the device toward photons.
