We e imagine that all theorbital angular momenta of the electrons couple to give a total L, and that all the spinsare similarly coupled to give a total S. Only at this stage do we imagine the two kindsof momenta coupling through the spin–orbit interaction to give a total J. The permitted values of J are given by the Clebsch–Gordan series
