Cathode rays are the beam of fast electrons which are emitted by the cathode in a vacuumn tube.
And in this way the elctrons were discovered by JJ Thomspon.
The gas was residual U can assume  natural air (O2) that was fully ioniszed b/w the cathide and anode.
