Alkanes with odd number of carbon atoms have lower melting point than those with an even number of carbon atoms

Dear Student,
 The melting point depends on the structure of the atom. Since even-length
chains have a center of inversion unlike the odd-length ones, it has greater
stability and therefore higher melting point.
