Firstly, let us understand activity coefficient. It is the ratio of effective concentration and actual concentration. Not necessarily all the substances act according to their molar concentration. Ideal solutions have activity coefficient equal to 1.

Activity on the other hand, is the product of activity coefficient and molar concentration.
