A power company burns approximately 474 tonnes of coal per day to produce electricity. If the sulphur content of the coal is 1.30% by weight. How many tonnes SO2 are dumped in the atmosphere each day?

Firstly we need to find the weight of sulphur which is being burnt: 

474 x 0.013 = 6.162 

Now we need to change this into moles: 

6.162/32.1 = 0.192 moles 

This is the amount of moles of sulphur but we need to find the amount of SO2. The equation for the formation of SO2 is: 

S + O2 -> SO2 

Therefore we know that the amount of moles of SO2 is also 0.192 as it is a 1:1 ratio. 
So all we need to do now is convert out of moles: 

64.1 x 0.192 = 12.3
