question mark

50ltr of a certain liquid is confined in a piston system at the external pressure of 100atm. this pressure is suddenly released and liquid is expanded against constant atmospheric pressure , volume of liquid increases by 1ltr and final pressure on the liquid is 10 atm . find the work done.
ans =1 ltr.atm.

Here eventually both the Pressure and the Volume varied.
Therfore, the Work done by the piston would be => delta(PV) => VdP + PdV
=> 50*(100-10) + 100*1
=> 4500 + 100
=> 4600 J

The external pressure is 100 atm
Change in volume = 51 - 50 =1 L
Work done for constant pressure = P (delta) V
=> 100*1 = 100 J
1 L atm = 100 J
Hence the answer 1 L atm or 100 J

Here the pressure is suddenly being released so it is an irreversible process.
Now the work is being done against constant atmospheric pressure which is equal to 1atm.
Here the increase in volume is 1L so
             ∆v=1L
              p=1atm
Work done is p∆v=1Latm
( Here we need not think about the external pressure 100atm or the final pressure 10 atm since the work is being done against the constant atmospheric pressure only.)
