Kinetic energy of any molecules is related with the molecular motion. Greater the speed of molecules higher would be the kinetic energy.
Potential energy of molecules are related to the position of molecule, grater the kinetic energy less would be the potential energy.

Kinetic energy is important for a chemical reaction to take place. Molecules move with high speed and they collide with each other, this collision provides the activation energy for the reaction.
