Types of solids on the basis of electrical conductivity
Solids exhibit an amazing range of electrical conductivities extending over 27 orders of magnitude. One way of classifying solid materials is according to the ease with which they conduct electricity. Solids are classified into three groups: Conductors, semi – conductors and insulators.
(a) Conductors: Metals are good conductors and have conductivities in the order 107 .
(b) Insulators: Those solids which have very low conductivities ranging from 10-20 to 10-10 are electrical insulators. Eg. MnO, CoO, NiO
(c) Semi – Conductors: These solids which have intermediate conductivities generally from 10-6 to 104 are termed as semiconductors.
