Sir, what is the hybridisation of chlorine in chlorate ion? And if there is some shortcut to find out hybridisation?

chlorate ion - ClO3-

oxidation no of Cl = +5

or it will depend on which Cl is forming bonds and having lone pairs available on it.

For this u need to draw its structure:

To know the hybridization, imagine the structure of ClO3-.

There are two oxygens with double bond with Chlorine and one Oxygen with a single bond with chlorine. And there is one lone pair.

Now, count the total number of sigma bonds and lone pairs. The result will be 4. This corresponds to sp3 hybridization.(s + 3p = 4 orbitals) Thus, it will be a tetrahedron BUT the upper part will beoccupied by the lone pair. Thus, the structure itself will be trigonal pyramidal. This is a shortcut method to find any hybridisation.

Chlorate = ClO3-

   Hybridization is sp3 because the no. of single bonds formed is 4 ( including 1 single bond, 1 singlet linkage, and 2 coordinate bonds).

Hey just use the formula

=s.a plus ½(v-o.s)

Where s.a»no. Of surrounding atoms,

V»valency (no. Of electrons in outermost orbit)

O.s» oxidation state in compound

In chrolat ion s.a»3 , v»7, o.s»5

Which gives 3 plus ½(7-5)» 3 plus1»4

So sp3
