Calculate the weight of 60 percent H2SO4 required decomposing 50 g of chalk(calcium carbonate).

Dear Menka,

MM of CaCO3 is 40 + 12 + 48 = 100

Equation CaCO3 + H2SO4 = CaSO4 + CO2 + H2O

So 1 mole of calcium carbonate reacts with 1 mole of sulphuric acid.

In the question 50 g of CaCO3 used which is 0.5 moles.

H2SO4 is 2 + 32 + 64 = 98 0.5 moles is 49 g of H2SO4

This is a 60% solution so the answer is 100 x 49 / 60 = 81.67 g.
