What is phlogiston theory? why it was ruled out

phlogistan theory was an attempt to explain phenomenon called combustion.

according to the theory there is a combustible element called phlogistan contained in every combustible object which is released during combustion.

the theory demised as it could not explain the gain of weight of some material when they are burned as the weight should decrease when any element is burned because it looses phlogistan.

and the final blow to this theory was the advent of the chaloric theory of combustion.which explained that element called 

oxygen i s needed for combustion.and it also explained the gain of weight .
