the emf of the cell
Hg/ mercurous nitrate// mercurous nitrate/ Hg
where concentration of ions at anode is .02M and concentration of ions at cathode is .2M is .0295V at 25 celsius. then moleculor formula for mercuroust nitrate is????
ans give is Hg2(NO3)2 . but using the formula of concentration cell i got the value of n as 2. hence formla should be Hg(NO3)2... please clarify.....
it happens because of these reactions
Hg22+ + 2e- = Hg2 (reduction of Hg)
2NO3- = 2NO3 + 2e- (oxidation of NO3- )
Hg2+ + 2e- = Hg (this is wrong)
just a comment that we wud be needing to know that the mercurous ion exists in dimeric form to solve the problem besides the fact that it has a +2 charge on it
