Rust is scientifically called oxidation, which occurs when oxygen comes in long-term contact with certain metals. Over time, the oxygen combines with the metal at an atomic level, forming a new compound called an oxide and weakening the bonds of the metal itself. If the base metal is iron or steel, the resulting rust is properly called iron oxide

There is very confusion over difference between rusting and corrosion.

Corrosion is the broad term for something that something is being broken down or eaten away due to chemical reaction. For example dis colorization of a painted object that has been in the sun. You can see some red cars turn pink in time if not take care of. Or i metal when you leave nickel in lemon juice above the water line will turn green and when you wipe it away it feels all rough and that is corrosion

Rust is a specific type of corrosion that consists of iron being reacting with water (or moist air) causing iron oxides to form.

Rusting is only of iron.

Dear student,

Rust is scientifically called oxidation, which occurs when oxygen comes in long-term contact with certain metals. Over time, the oxygen combines with the metal at an atomic level, forming a new compound called an oxide and weakening the bonds of the metal itself. If the base metal is iron or steel, the resulting rust is properly called iron oxide. Rusted aluminium would be called aluminum oxide, copper forms copper oxide and so on.

When Iron substance is kept in open air, it gets reacted with the moisture present in the air and a chemical change occurs.

The topmost layer gets spoilt.

However rust can be removed by some methods...
