A process which takes place by itself, without any external aid under the given conditions is called a spontaneous process. It may require initiation.
Examples: (i) Flow of heat from a body at a higher temperature to a body at a lower temperature.
(ii) Movement of gas molecules from the region of higher pressure to a region of lower pressure.
(iii) Flow of water from a higher level to a lower level etc., are spontaneous physical processes.
(iv) Reaction between zinc and sulphuric acid to produce zinc sulphat{e} and hydrogen. (Zn + H2S04 -> ZnS04 + H2).
(v) Reaction between an acid and base to produce salt and water etc. are spontaneous chemical processes. ( NaOH + HC1 NaCl + H20).
