Two molecules of alkyl halides (same or different) react with sodium in the presence of dry ether to form alkanes.Thisreaction is known as Wurtz reaction.
it is generally applied to prepare symmetrical alkanes with more number of carbon atoms

2R–X + 2Na → R–R + 2Na+X..
