The latest news that is doing rounds nowadays is a yet another suicide case of an IIT student. And what was the reason behind this extreme step? As usual, stress and depression! But would this spree ever come to an end? Its high time that we find a solution to this! The number of suicide cases is on rise these days and a majority of cases are of engineering college students in the age group of 18-25. Numerous factors are responsible for this, the chief and the common one being stress! When we know the factor responsible for this action then why not combat it? Let us have a look at the various factors responsible for the rise in suicide cases in engineering colleges: 1. Pressure handling and stress- This is the most vital reason which forces students to take this extreme step. The engineering stream is not an easy one. It demands a lot of hard work and dedication. The elite lot is easily able to cope up with pressure but the mediocre are the worst hit. They find it difficult to cope up with so much pressure and as a result creep into depression. 2. Social expectations- Students are often overburdened by the expectations of society. If a student is bright he is expected to maintain his position in the college. Family, that should actually be a support for the student becomes a cause of worry. It has been often noticed that students are not worried for their future but are rather tensed as to how the family would react if he couldn`t fulfill their expectation. 3. Anti-socialists- It is generally believed that studious students are generally boring. They are a secluded lot. They just limit themselves to books and are not very friendly. Due to this they are not able to vent out their feelings as they don’t have anyone to offer them support. As a result they get depressed and decide to end their life. 4. Drugs- Engineering stream is too demanding. Most of the students who make it to this stream and especially to the IITs have to stay away from their families. This gives them the freedom to follow their whims and fancies. As a result of this and also due to increased stress of studies, some students get addicted to drugs. This further ruins their performance and provokes them to take this extreme step. 5. Placement issues- When students get admitted to some elite colleges like the IITs, their main aim is to get an excellent placement. So, when their dream is not fulfilled and they don’t get a placement of their choice they get depressed. It is the end of world for them. And so they feel that ending life is the only option left! We agree that life is becoming more and more complicated nowadays. And as a result we often lose hope and get depressed. But is that the only option? Wouldn’t it be better if we could search for a solution? We discuss here some of the solutions which could prevent students from thinking of such an extreme way out: 1. Increase the number of friends: Man is a social animal and so he needs someone with whom he can share his feelings. People who are alone are prone to depression. If one has a friend, he can share his feelings with him and as a result he feels light. The chances of suicide in such a case are hence reduced. 2. Group Study- Studies often create anxiety which can finally lead to depression. Group study is the best possible alternative. When a person studies with his friends he is less stressed and does not feel lonely. 3. Positive Attitude- Life is full of challenges. Those who get depressed and lose hope fail in this game called life without even attempting to fight. Consider your problems as a challenge and try to face them. It would be difficult but won’t be impossible. If you are positive and determined, you are sure to emerge as a winner. 4. Stress Busters- There is no doubt in the fact that life is getting more and more stressful day by day. So, it is important to take out some time for yourself from your busy schedule and practice meditation or deep breathing exercises. This reduces your stress level and also infuses positivity. 5. Sports and Creative Activities- If you are good at sports or have interest in sports, then you must practice it for some time on daily basis. Take out around 15 minutes daily and listen to music, make painting or do some recreational activity. This will help you in realizing how beautiful life is. Last, but not the least, is your career the ultimate thing in life? No doubt it plays a vital role and is important but life is not just about being a successful professional! Your life is not only yours but numerous people are connected to it. Is suicide a solution to any problem? What about your parents and relatives? Do they actually deserve this? The answers to all these questions is ‘no’. It is very important to have an optimistic attitude towards life and think beyond placements and marks. All this is just a part of life and not the end of your life. Life is a beautiful journey which demands a bit of courage and positivity. Accept it as a challenge, be optimistic and you will surely emerge as a winner!
