As examination season is approaching all too quickly in a few months, we are all voraciously gorging on our books and other resources to perform exceptionally well in every subject.Although studying day and night for long hours is important, one more practice that students must give a try to is improving memory for better results. But with so many techniques to hone one’s memory today, we end up picking up the wrong ones most of the time, which, needless to say, affects our overall performance. Hence to help students with this issue, we have compiled a list of very usefultechniques to improve memorythat will ensure success in your exams. 1. Focus on Learning All right! We must admit that mugging up is not always the way to go. If you believe that your last-night mugging up tricks can turn you a scholar one day, then you are obviously playing with your academic career. You got to focus on learning, kid! That’s the only way to remember things for a long period of time. Stop mugging up for god’s sake! 2. Don’t Trust an Institution For Learning Obviously with so many other options available today, relying entirely on institutions and colleges for learning is not always intelligent. If you couldn’t enroll into a coaching institution, then consider yourself lucky because you can also learn from other inexpensive options such as educational television programs, online courses, books, and student groups etc. 3. Believe in Yourself Science says that all it takes is eight seconds for human brain to process any data through hippocampus into its memory center. God! You can learn and absorb quicker than you think. 4. Don’t Neglect the Right Environment Science again asks you to check your environment when you are studying as it can help your brain encode all the information. 5. Live in Your Present Stressing about your result in future or your performance in the past will play a spoilsport in your preparation for the upcoming exams. So focus on your present and study hard and smart. 6. Create Your Own Learning Environment Figure out the environment that suits you best and helps in your preparation. You can also create your own learning environment at home by being around things that gives youa substantial boost in your preparation. For example, if you plan to learn online then have all you need around to avoid disruption in between. If you are one of those who swear by visual learning then get all the tools to create visuals. Or if you are an auditory leaner, then better have a tape recorder close to play instruction or information whenever you need to. 7. Make Most of Your Senses Using all your senses while preparing for exams is quite an effective approach to learning faster. You should follow read-write-talk pattern to have all your senses working in tandem for you. Draw and write to stimulate your motor pathways, which help you retain information. You should avoid taking up other tasks while using motor skills to allow information ingrained in you. Listening to lectures online and explaining it to others aloud is also a great way to remember what you have learned. If you don’t get anybody to listen to your explanations then just explain it to yourself aloud. If you are learning with a model such as a car engine then touch every part of the engine. This way you will remember the parts. 8. Mnemonic Devices Learning with mnemonic devices is not only interesting, but also creative. This involves using images, sentences, alliteration, and rhymes etc. For example, if you want to remember Victoria’s (place) name then connect it with the image of queen victoria. If you are drawing a figure then try drawing it in 3D to remember. You can use sentences to remember a difficult sequence of words. For example, musicians use “Every Good Boy Does Fine” for their musical chords—E, G, B, D, and F. Similarly for Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, you can use Kids Played Cards on Furry Gray Skins. You can create many on your own that you can remember for long. You can also use rhymes to remember any particular piece of important information. For example,” "In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Use “Chunk” technique to memorize a long series of numbers. You can chunk your 16 digit credit card number in four and memorize accordingly. 9. Learn to Organize Learning to organizeyour preparation is very important. Make a list, note things down, prioritize things, use calendars to remember dates, break complex ideas into simple thoughts, always keep a pencil, a pad, and a flashlight by your bedside to note down thoughts you have at night. There are two types of organization—external and internal. External organization helps you pursue creative things while internal demands you to follow a stressful lifestyle. 10. Overlearn Your Subjects Overlearning is not always harmful for students. You got to use your overlearning skill the right way to make most of it. Spend extra hours to learn a particular subject and keep reviewing it as much as you can after every short interval of time. This process is called “Spaced Rehearsal” or “Spaced Repetition”. Overlearn or review your work to make it your second nature. 11. Have a Positivity in You A good amount of positivity in you can take you a long way in every test of life. So needless to say, you must have confidence in you to face all the stress that exams bring with them. If you can’t learn something, then it’s all right. Give yourself time, take a break, indulge in your hobby for a while and see the result for yourself. The idea is to make you feel you will win. You won’t win if you’ve already inside you. 12. Have a Healthy Lifestyle Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important because only a healthy body can have a healthy brain. Eat right and frequently, say, 6 or 5 times a day. Don’t take heavy meals; it will make you die for siesta. Work out at least 5 days a week for 40 minutes to stay healthy and active. Science says that a good work out session helps a brain to enhance its functions. With the aforementioned tips to improve memory, you will be able to perform exceptionally well in the upcoming examination season. So just think positive and let the good time welcome your success.
