Dear Amarnath,

As you know that in an atom the electrons are in continuous transitions from one state to another. In this process they absorb as well as lose energies depending on their transition.

When white light falls on a red shirt, the electrons inside the red shirt atoms absorb different parts of the visible spectrum as each portion has different wavelengths and so different energies. Due to characteristic nature of red shirt, it absorbs all colors except red. All other colors are used in providing energies for the electronic transition.

Therefore, a red shirt looks red.
