Anything that interests you by Henry Petroski. He writes a great deal on design and the nature and consequence of engineering.
Cheaper by the Dozen. This is a classic children's book about growing up in a family with 12 kids (lately modernized and made into a Steve Martin film I haven't seen). Frank andLillian Gilbrethwere both engineers, and she carried on the business after he passed away, despite living in an era that really didn't cotton to the notion of a woman engineer. There are biographies just of her, too, and even an autobiography.
Stuff: The Materials the World Is Made of,by Ivan Amato. A fascinating and engaging overview of materials science and why it matters.
The Unwritten Laws of Engineering,by W.J. King. This is exceedingly dated, but if you're new to the working world, it's a quick primer on office politics-for-engineers. Supplement with some Quora updates, and you should be better able to navigate your first job.
The Design of Everyday Things,by Donald A. Norman. This book is about user interface design. Many of his examples are physical interfaces: phones, cars, stoves, and nuclear power plants, to name a few. But the lessons apply to software interfaces at least as well.
Cradle to Cradle,by William McDonough.A classic read on sustainability and product life cycle. Edit: they now have a newer book out titledThe Upcycle.
Reinventing Fire, by Amory Lovins et.al. This is the book currently on my nightstand. He discusses energy and efficiency approaches for the U.S. and the world, with the idea of maintaining an equivalent level of service and convenience, even while bringing the fossil fuel era to a close. (Amory Lovins has two TED talks if you would like the brief introduction.)
The 2nd Law: Energy, Chaos and Form, by P.W. Atkins. A masterful exploration of the many ways in which one can understand and apply the second law, and an exploration of the topic of entropy.
