NBS is actually n-BoromoSuccinide... It helps for bormination.. But unlinke other reactions, the bormine does not attach accross the double bond.. But at some other position... In other words, it helps to carry out bromination without breaking of the double bond..

NBS is used for selective bromination at allylic , benzylic and alpha- to triple bond position that is called to be propargylic position..!
