please explain the inert pair effect in very much detail?

The inert pair effect is the tendency of the electrons in the outermost atomic s orbital to remain unionized or unshared in compounds of post-transition metals.. 
or in simple words u can say its the tendency of the valence shell electron , not to participate in the bonding process .
