Think of a combination that has all the socks below 4 but the maximum possible .

suppose they draw 3 blue 3 red 3 white and 2 black socks then next sock will be either white blue or red

as there aren''t more than 2 black socks .

so total number of socks = 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 12 .
