There are counters available in x different colors. The counters are all alike except for th color. The total no of arrangements consisting of y counters, assuming sufficient no. of counters of each color, if no arrangemaent consists of all counters of the same color is?

first counter can be selected in x way

second counter can be selected in x ways

.

.

. yth counter can be selected in x ways

 total ways =x^y

but it is also include that case in which all the counter are of same colour

so total posible selection = x^y-x
