Acrosome is the part of an mammalian sperm, which is an male gamete.Sperm consist of four parts-
1.Head
2.Neck
3.Middle piece and
4.Tail.
The fine structure of an sperm has been studied with the help of an electron microscope. The stucture revealed that sperm head consist of an large nucleus and an acrosome.Acrosome is present at the tip of the sperm head which is an tiny thickened cap like structure. Its an compact mass with a double -layered membrane.During the fertilisation this acrosome facilitates the penetration of the sperm into the ovum by secreting some enzymes.

The acrosome is an organelle that develops over the anterior half of the head in the spermatozoa (sperm cells) of many animals. It is a cap-like structure derived from the Golgi apparatus. Acrosome formation is completed during testicular maturation. In mammals the acrosome contains digestive enzymes (including hyaluronidase and acrosin). These enzymes break down the outer membrane of the ovum, called the zona pellucida, allowing the haploid nucleus in the sperm cell to join with the haploid nucleus in the ovum.
