Ions

Ions are atoms or molecules that have gained or lost one or more electrons, resulting in a net electrical charge. They can be categorized into two types:

  • Cations: Positively charged ions formed by losing electrons (e.g., Na+).
  • Anions: Negatively charged ions formed by gaining electrons (e.g., Cl-).

Radicals

Radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions that have unpaired electrons, making them highly reactive. They can exist independently and often participate in chemical reactions. For example, the hydroxyl radical (•OH) is a common radical in organic chemistry.

Valency

Valency refers to the ability of an atom to bond with other atoms, determined by the number of electrons in its outer shell. It indicates how many electrons an atom can lose, gain, or share to form chemical bonds. For instance, carbon has a valency of four, allowing it to form four bonds.

Naming Variable Valency

When elements can exhibit more than one valency, specific naming conventions are used. The most common method involves using Roman numerals to indicate the oxidation state of the element in a compound. For example:

  • Iron(II) oxide (FeO) indicates iron has a valency of +2.
  • Iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) indicates iron has a valency of +3.

This system helps clarify the specific charge of the element in the compound, ensuring accurate communication in chemical nomenclature.
