Rusting is aided by both moisture (water) and air (oxygen). By painting an iron gate, we prevent its contact from the air and moisture present in the atmosphere. Hence, rusting is prevented.

First of all we know that oxygen, water and air ,these three are very vital and essential for a thing to rust. Iron gates are metal. Iron gates have moisture but paints contains no moisture. So,painting must prevent the iron gates from rusting because it will not allow the iron gates from coming in the contact with moisture and oxygen.
