Chlorination of most higher alkanes gives a mixture of isomeric monochloro products as well as more highly halogentated compounds.
Chlorine is relatively unselective.
It does not discriminate greatly among the different type of hydrogen atoms ( primary, secondary and territary ) in an alkane .
An example is the light- promoted chlorination of isobutane .
it produces isobutyl chloride (48%)
