)numbering of carbon chains is done from side so as to give lowest number to the side chain.

)if more than one side chain is present sum of positions should be minimum while numbering the carbon chain.

)if 2 different alkyl groups are at equal positions from each end, numbering is done from the side of smaller alkyl group.

)when the substituents are other than alkyl groups numbers are assigned in the alphabetical order.

)when a compound contains a functional group(including multiple bond),the lowest no. is assigned to the functional group and not the substituents, even if it violates the minimum sum rule.

)if more than one functional group is present, senior group is named as suffix and junior as prefix

)the carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups are always chosen as principal functions.
