History

MIT Manipal LogoManipal Institute of Technology, Manipal was started in 1957 as Manipal Engineering College, and in 1974 it was renamed. Founded by Dr. T.M.A. Pai, the founder of the town of Manipal it was the first privately funded technical institute in India. The first discipline to be offered was Civil engineering but by the year 1961, full undergraduate programs were also available in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The first in-campus hostels were established in 1961 for the outdoor Students. In the beginning the institute was affiliated to the Karnataka University in Dharwad, but in 1965, the institute affiliation has been changed to the Mysore University in Mysore. Along the decades, with the expansion of the college, more courses were added. In 1974, together with the renaming, the institute was brought under the purview of Mangalor University, the status of which would continue until the establishment of Manipal University (MAHE) in the late 1990s. And in 2000, the institution has been delegated a deemed university.
 

Campus

MIT, Manipal has the capability to house most of its students on the campus in its fifteen different hostel (dorm) buildings, and can be considered as a fully residential campus. Covering an area of 7,384,576 sq ft, the campus has together with the college building; hostel buildings, staff quarters, a separate library, outdoor playgrounds for football, hockey, cricket, tennis, basket ball and volley ball and a swimming pool. The Institute also has well-equipped indoor games rooms for badminton, table tennis, chess, carom etc and a well equipped gymnasium.

Hostel

With 15 hostels, with a capacity of about 3500 Boys and 2264 girls, in the MIT, Manipal, every student is required to stay in the Institute's Hostel unless the parent/guardian of the student concerned has applied in writing that his ward is to be permitted to stay outside. The students may however be permitted to stay in private houses of relations, or friends or in their own lodges but with the prior permission of the Principal or if refused admission in the hostels according to the prudence of the Principal. Eight separate messes, Vegetarian and non-vegetarian, one cosmopolitan mess are attached to the hostels, the preference of which the student must give eat the time of the admission. Students are generally not permitted to change from one mess to another in the middle of a month.

Cultural Fest

"National Cadet Corps" is a premier youth organisation which helps the students to exhibit and develop the leadership qualities and helps to develop comradeship and spirit of adventure. MIT, Manipal also have a Company under the name 4 KAR. ENGR. COY N.C.C. having the sanctioned strength of 150 cadets, which follows the ways of the NCC. Then there is an organization run by the students of the institute under the patronage of the MIT Students Council, which consists of an elected body,with the responsibility of organizing programs and providing opportunities for recreation, games and literary activities including the yearly magazine. The annual athletic meet, tournaments, annual social gathering, periodical entertainment programs, concerts and other cultural and social functions all forms the activities of the Council. Technical Associations for each branch of Engineering are also instituted with the students of a particular branch becoming members of the respective association automatically the clubs and associations of which has a nominated staff member as chairman, a student secretary, a joint secretary and treasurer. The campus is a community which is always buzzing with activity all year round.
