The Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO), now known as the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) is a part of the Mathematical Olympiad Programme (MOP) in India. It is organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. It is the Stage 1 examination that leads students to the International Mathematics Olympiad.
The syllabus for RMO or IOQM includes:
- arithmetic of integers,
- geometry,
- quadratic equations and expressions,
- trigonometry,
- coordinate geometry,
- the system of linear equations,
- permutations and combinations,
- factorization of polynomial,
- inequalities,
- elementary combinatorics,
- probability theory and number theory,
- finite series,
- complex numbers, and
- elementary graph theory.
Clearing the regional mathematics olympiad is an achievement for students. At askIITians we provide all the past year's papers for RMO until 2022 for your practice. You can download these question papers in just one click and start practising right away.

Benefits of Solving RMO Past Year Papers
- Understanding the exam pattern: Due to the pandemic, HBCSE changed the exam pattern for IMO. Earlier, there were 3 different stages to reaching the international mathematics olympiad. But now, HBCSE has decreased to only two stages. However, you can still get an idea of the types of questions asked in the olympiad with past papers. The past papers will help you understand what kind of questions can be asked in the IOM exam and help you in enhancing your preparation. You can build up a better strategy on how to tackle the olympiad and answer maximum questions.
- Practising for the olympiad: Students can work upon their problem-solving speeds by practising different previous years’ papers for an olympiad. This way they will be able to solve all the questions in the olympiad within the given duration. It will also help you in revising the important formulae and their applications for the olympiads.
- Track your performance: Solving past papers is a great way to self-assess your performance in these tests. The more problems you solve, the better prepared you will be for the olympiads. You will also be able to understand your areas of strengths and weaknesses in the subject and will be aware of the concepts that are generally asked in the olympiad.
- Revise better: When you study something once, chances are you will forget it after some time. But with past papers, you can keep revising your concepts and remember them better. The more you revise, the better your chances are to score well in exams. Statistics prove that those who spend enough time in revision perform better in exams compared to those who don’t. Solving mock papers helps in a comprehensive revision of everything you have studied.

Until 2022, two separate exams - PRMO and RMO were conducted to select students for the IMO training camp. Now, these two examinations are combined into one exam called IOQM or Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics.
- Is RMO subjective or objective?
Until 2020, RMO was a subjective olympiad. In the 2021-2022 cycle the IOQM was introduced which included 10 questions of 2 marks each, 12 questions of 5 marks each, and 2 questions of 10 marks each.
