In an effort to correct flaws in existing admission norms for the Indian Institutes of Technology, the government has revoked 20th percentile rule, which, according to experts, will change criterion for appearing in IIT-JEE (Advanced). The current 20th percentile rule that considers application from best performing students in school-leaving examinations has been attracting legal challenges for a long time.

The government might change the existing criterion to minimum 75% -80% marks in school leaving examinations.  Though, cut off was 60% before the changes were introduced in 2012.

Although all states of India will have to score either 75% or 80% to appear in IIT-JEE, the 20th percentile rule will continue in low scoring school boards in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.  Meanwhile, government officials state that all stakeholders propose the school leaving examination should get its due.
