Sundar Pichai metallurgical engineer from IIT KGP becomes the most powerful Indian inside GoogleA ten-year Google expert and a metallurgical engineer from IIT KGP, Sundar Pichai on Friday has been appointed the most powerful Indian inside the world’s largest Internet Company “Google”. Promoted as the Senior Vice President of Chrome, Android and Apps, Sundar Pichai is the new second-in-command inside Google and will directly report to the CEO Larry Page. 

Pichai who is now the Senior Vice President, has been given the command to handle all the products which the Google offers. They are: Google+, search, maps, commerce, ads and infrastructure teams.

In an internal communication with the employees of Google, CEO Larry Page said, “Sundar has incredible skills to carry work better and assemble teams around the super important stuff.”

On his further conversation about the future roles, he said, “Our focus is to conduct more business-centric meetings with the functional heads and Sundar to discuss about various aspects such as important legal, finance, HR, government relations or PR issues.”

Hence in a way, Larry Page will now focus more on the business related matters, while Sundar will be free to run the products of Google.

Sundar Early Life

Pichai, 42, is a native of the South India. He was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and did his early schooling from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) Chennai. He holds a bachelor degree from IIT Kharagpur, an M.S. from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.   

Sundar Pichai worked at McKinsey and Applied Materials before joining Google in 2004. At Google, Pichai was initially working as a product manager where he handled the ‘Google’ search bar in the upper right corner of Web browsers. It was only in the year 2008 when Pichai along with his team launched the famous Google Chrome.

Amit Singhal, the senior VP for search and Google Fellow and Sridhar Ramaswamy, the senior VP for Ads and commerce will now report the newly appointed Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai along with other product heads.
