why endometrium breaks? is it not wasteful activity in terms of energy? it must be better if it is a permanent feature

When fertilisation occures the zygote gets embedded in endometrium .But when fertilsation doesn`t occur then too the egg will be embedded in endometrium if the endometrium will be permanant. So it is necessary that it should break for removal of egg from reprodctive tract
