In EcoRI, R is the strain of the bacteria Escherichia Coli, I indicates it was procured before EcoRII. R strain means Rough ( Non - Virulent ). R strain of bacteria do not have a protective capsule which S strain have. You can read more about R and S strains in the biology NCERT textbook for XII standard.
