Divergent evolution occurs when animals with similar structures (common ancestor) develop to perform different functions. Eg: Thorns of Bougainvillea and tendrils of Cucurbita.
Adaptive radiation is the evolution of different species in a given geographical area to other areas of same geography(habitat) Eg: Marsupials of Australia, Darwin’s finches of Galapagos Island
  • All adaptive radiation is divergent evolution but not all divergent evolution are adaptive radiation.
